When God Doesn’t Make Sense

Sometimes God doesn’t make sense

In 1992, after pastoring for 9 years, God told me to become a counselor.   I didn’t think I could to do it, and didn’t understand why he was telling me to do this.  But he opened doors for me to get 2 part-time counseling jobs. Then, 1 year later, I lost both counseling jobs over 1 weekend!  God didn’t make sense.

We have all encountered times when God doesn’t make sense:  deaths, life-threatening illnesses, accidents, lost jobs, crises, etc.  Anyone in a personal relationship with God will be confronted with his truth and reality that is different from what was thought to be true.

The First Time I Heard God’s Voice

The first time I heard God’s voice was when I was living in Puerto Rico.  As with most who hear his voice, it comes to me as a quiet voice within my mind and heart, not audibly.  But the first time was during a two-year quest to learn who God is.  That adventure began while I was in the U.S. Navy serving aboard a ship in the Mediterranean Sea, which I may relate in another post.  Entering the Navy, I was an agnostic, not convinced that God existed or had done me any good, but I retained a healthy skepticism regarding the divine.  My experience on that ship changed that.

  • His astonishing plan for humanity.
  • How God relates with us and guides us through his Holy Spirit.
  • His design for living that enables us to experience The Abundant Life on earth (we don’t have to wait for heaven).
  • How to do loving relationships with God and one another.
  • How to care for ourselves,

Made to be Like God: The Five Dimensions He Gave Us #1

When God created us to be like him—you know, “in his image”—he gave us four dimensions identical to his, plus a fifth—a body.  A key to experiencing the Abundant Life God wants us to have is understanding his principles and life skills, and applying them to have a better life.  God’s design is a whole-person (holistic) approach to life.

Here are the five dimensions, in order of importance:

1.    Spiritual
2.    Intellectual
3.    Emotional
4.    Relational
5.    Physical

In this series of weekly posts, I’ll list the elements of each dimension and the skills needed to have the full life Jesus promised us (“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”).  The good news …
