LIfe Situations Mark Refers to Other Professionals

I am trained and have experience coaching people in most areas of life, though there are some situations for which I refer people to other professionals.  However, some people choose to work with me on life skills training or spiritual direction at the same time they work with another professional.

I refer people with any mental disorder that causes marked impairment in their lives to therapists and physicians.

Here are some examples:

  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia)
  • Major depressive disorder, including suicidal thinking or a suicide plan
  • Bi-polar (manic-depressive) disorder
  • Panic disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Substance abuse disorders that require medical treatment for detoxification (e.g., heroine, severe alcoholism)
  • Personality disorders

As much as many people would prefer not to take medication, most of these disorders are, in-part, the result of changes to the brain structure or brain chemistry that can only be treated by helping the brain with the chemicals it lacks to regulate thinking, emotions, and behavior.

For example, a purely physical condition like diabetes can only be treated with medication–insulin, but also requires counseling to help the person control their daily diet.  In the same way, if the brain is not producing sufficient amounts of a regulating hormone to control anxiety or depression, or due to genetics, injury, or abnormal growth, is causing distress and impairment, only replacing the missing hormone or otherwise compensating for it, will a person be able to manage symptoms.  Decades of research has shown that the best treatment is a combination of medications and therapy.

I am not a financial planner or attorney, so I refer folks who are seeking investment and retirement planning or legal counsel.

I can teach people to get their finances under control using budgets and, if needed, overcoming overspending habits.  I have helped hundreds of people learn to better cope with life crises related to finances and relationship issues while they work with another professional.
